about

Chris Durham, as Church Shuttle, has been documenting the grim, slow-motion decline of American cities and suburbs with a near-ghoulish glee for years now. Based in Michigan, Durham is waist deep in the dirt and grime of the manufacturing industry’s death throes, transmitting countless dispatches from the edge for multiple tape labels and his own All Gone imprint. R.I.P. Plaza is a soundtrack for the end of the Midwest, or the West, or the South, thematically full of exurban horrors and evening news casualties like “dystopian suburban living, human trafficking, pedophile neighbors, pill addiction, blight, Catholic schooling.” The sounds are jarring and haunting and beautifully warped, influenced by 80s tape culture, early industrial and power electronics and Krautrock. This is a tape meant to be worn out. R.I.P. Plaza, after awhile everywhere looks the same and we’ll all burn.
